A couple people have sent me this amazing video of Cab Calloway performing “The Jumpin’ Jive” in the film Stormy Weather (1943). If the Hi De Ho Man isn’t enough for you, the dancing, by the Nicholas Brothers, will explode your mind. And all performed in proper evening wear.
I love the way these pants move - fabrics were much heavier, on the whole, in days of yore, and the drape that comes fro...

"Google your favorite ballet stars, and you'll find assorted bravura passages that show off his leaps, his spins, her balances on the tip of her tiny, heavily shellacked toe, their amazing flexibility.
Subtleties don't play well on YouTube, so the abundant dance clips have been promoting a kind of connoisseurship of virtuosity."

"People think that I am African, but I have lived in Washington my whole life. My parents are from South Carolina and came up here in the early 40's. I grew up in a terrible neighborhood called Sursum Corda. I did a lot of dumb things as a kid. You know, I was hanging out with the wrong crowd. My Mom always said, 'If you hang with the wolves, you will howl.' It's true, but I d...
Almost a year ago I posted a work-in-progress video of Oscillare as it was presented at last years Sonar festival. Oscar Sol from Electronic Performers , the creators of this project was so kind to send me an update about the completion of the project and as we can see in the video, it has become an impressive piece of work.
Oscillare; An Interactive Dawn is an interactive multimedia dan...
I had the most wonderful weekend!
Saturday night, was the Cymbal Salaam Community Middle Eastern Dance Recital, in which I danced with fellow students, as well as instructors and troupes. We students were all so nervous, but also very excited about dancing. The theater was abuzz as we put finishing touches on our hair and costumes and waited for our turn to go on stage.
We performed 8th out of...
I haven’t slept. For much of last night, my daughter Ava cried out in her sleep with nightmares. Eventually her cries would wake us both. Instead of going back to sleep, Ava would chat with me about her day. I wish I could remember all the amazing things she told me at 2:00 AM.
Around 3:30 or so, we were both asleep when our little dog Emile began barking to be let down from the bed. (He’s too ...
